On Tuesday night Leeds United u23’s were defeated 3-0 at Nethermoor Park by Newcastle United u23’s in the first scheduled semi-final of the Premier League Cup.
Leeds brought in three first-team players for the defeat to the Magpies, with goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell, midfielder Kalvin Phillips and defender Gaetano Berardi starting for the hosts.
The first big chance of the game fell to Berardi as his front post strike rippled the side netting of Nathan Harker’s goal. The Whites undoubtedly started the match the better side, creating chances and seeing more of the ball than the visitors but unfortunately could not find a way to break the deadlock. Newcastle threatened through top scorer Elias Sorensen as he forced Peacock-Farrell in to action with a sweetly struck volley from 20 yards out. Despite pressure from the home side, both teams went in to half-time at 0-0.
Going in to the second-half Leeds made two notable changes with first-team players Kalvin Phillips and Gaetano Berardi being replaced by a pair of 19-year-old’s in the shape of Jamie Shackleton and Clarke Odour.
These substitutions would prove crucial in the inevitable outcome of the match as the momentum quickly shifted in the favour of the visitors. On 50 minutes Newcastle were awarded a penalty and Kelland Watts dispatched the spot-kick, sending Peacock-Farrell the wrong way. The Magpies doubled their lead within 4 minutes of going ahead as Cal Roberts finished off a nice move to put the visiting side in control of proceedings in front of a sold out Nethermoor Park.
Newcastle continued to dominate for the remainder of the game, adding a third after 86 minutes through the clinical Sorensen after some sloppy defending.
Tuesday’s 3-0 defeat sealed Newcastle’s place in the final and put an end to Leeds’ valiant cup run, as they now turn their attention to Coventry City under 23’s in Monday nights Professional League Development match.
