Chris Wilder: Becoming a Legend at the Lane

By William Castledine

“Chris Wilder, he’s one of our own,” the crowd chants at Bramall Lane.

And Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder is certainly stamping his name in the history books, with what has been an outstanding campaign and a magical three years.

Wilder arrived at the Lane in 2016 after spells with Halifax Town, Oxford United and a successful spell at Northampton Town gaining promotion to League one.

Wilder got his dream job at his boyhood club, Sheffield Utd, and it’s safe to say since then Blades fans have been in ecstasy.

In Wilder’s time at the Blades he’s seen his side gain promotion from League one to the Championship on his first attempt. Now, in his third season, he has achieved promotion to the Premier League.

So what is it that makes Chris Wilder so special?

In a recent interview with talkSPORT, Wilder revealed the secret behind his success: β€œIt’s about knitting a team together, organisation, team spirit, work ethic and tactically playing in a way that suits you to gain results.”

The Blades didn’t have one of the big budgets in the division and weren’t able to buy their way to promotion. Their style of play has helped them achieve this positive result.

We spoke to Sheffiled Utd fan Tom Cockerill, 18, about Chris Wilder. He said that Chris has “Been huge for the club and has had the city buzzing, well the red side of Sheffield anyway.”

On whether Wilder can carry on his magic and help the Blades stay up he said: “It will be tough, but there’s no better man for the job, he’s a blade through and through and will get the best out of the squad. He will bring a different style to the Premier league and hopefully it will keep us up.”
